The Temporomandibular Joint is a synovial condylar and hinge type joint acting as a sliding hinge joint connecting the mandible (jaw bone) to the skull. The temporomandibular joint is located on both sides of the skull just anterior to the ear. Irritation or disfunction of the TMJ know as Temporomandibular Disorder can occur unilaterally or bilaterally and can be associated with joint pain, jaw clicking, facial and jaw pain, headaches, difficulty chewing, jaw locking, and muscle soreness of the facial regions.
Causes of Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD), altered function of the temporomandibular joint, can be associates with stress, anxiety, injury, genetics, arthritic conditions, chronic grinding and clenching (Bruxism), as well as cervical spine dysfunction and cervical neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction. Misalignment (Subluxation) of the cervical vertebra can cause neurological and muscular irritation that can affect the muscular function associated with the temporomandibular joint function. Imbalance in neurological and muscle function can cause imbalance and dysfunction of the Temporomandibular joints.
Dr. Batson of Batson Chiropractic has treated many patients suffering with TMJ/TMD. Through patient history and examination Dr. Batson is able to evaluation the temporomandibular joint function, cervical spine function, to determine a proper diagnosis of TMJ and/or cervical spine neuro-muscular imbalance to determine a course of treatment.
Treatment may consist of very gentle specific manual manipulation to the mandible (jaw bone) to reset the position of the mandible head back into the joint socket, manual muscle massage for relaxation of muscle tone, very specific and gentle cervical spine manual manipulation for restoration of vertebral function, K-Laser Therapy for reduction of inflammation and pain and for acceleration of healing and restoration of normal function. Dr. Batson also endorses a complete dental evaluation and potential night guards for reduction of possible Bruxing.
