Dr. Batson Treating TMJ…. Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

The Temporomandibular joint is located on both sides of the skull, anterior to the ear.

Irritation or dysfunction of the TMJ can occur on either side or both sides simultaneously. Symptoms can be joint pain, clicking, headaches, difficulty chewing, facial muscle soreness.

TMJ disorder can be caused by stress, injury, arthritis, grinding of teeth as well as cervical spine dysfunction.

Dr. Batson has treated many patients suffering with TMJ disorder. He will take the patient’s history and perform an examination to evaluate the TMJ function. If indicated evaluation of the cervical spine will be also performed to better diagnose the cause of the TMJ dysfunction and determine the proper treatment plan.

Treatment may consist of:

  1. Very gentle specific manual manipulation to the mandible to restore function.
  2. Manual muscle massage for relaxation of muscle tone.
  3. Specific and gentle cervical spine manual manipulation for restoration of vertebral function.
  4. K-Laser Therapy for reduction of inflammation and pain, acceleration of healing and restoration of normal function.
  5. Dr. Batson also endorses, when indicated, a dental evaluation and potential night guards for reduction of grinding of teeth.
