Sacroiliac JOINT (SI JOINT)

Sacroiliac Joint (SI Joint)

The sacroiliac joint (SI) is the articulation point/joint between the bilateral ilium bones and the sacrum. The sacrum and the bilateral ilium are the bones that make up the pelvis.

The sacrum bone is a triangular shaped bone and is the lowest bone structure of the spine with the spinal vertebra/column resting on the sacrum. The upper portion of the right and left ilium articulate with the sacrum allowing movement of our pelvis enabling proper sitting, walking, running, bending, squatting, etc. The lower portion of the ilium encompasses the actual hip joint. The sacroiliac joints are the dimples we see located bilaterally at the belt line.

Irritation and/or dysfunction of the sacroiliac joint can occur with misalignment of the sacroiliac (SI) joint resulting from falls, injuries, repetitive stresses, poor posture and ergonomics, and pathology.

Pain associated with SI dysfunction can range from general stiffness of the SI joint, localized pain, severe localized pain, or even radicular pains to the lower extremity.
